Vegetables are source of vitamins and mineral. There are different vegetables to lace the local Nigerian food and soups, but pumpkin leaf a.k.a ugu leaf is on top as it is cross-cultural. Fluted pumpkin leaf is a tropical vine plant native to West Africa and a lucrative means of making money this season. Ugu leaf, unlike other plants, is easy to plant and harvest, it grows very fast and can be harvested within six weeks of planting. On its maturity, you can harvest and sell almost every week, thus creating a means of good cash flow.

Planting

Break the pods and extract the seeds one-by- one. Separate the seeds from the flesh and strings, then dry the seed for 7 days to prevent it from getting rotten in the soil.

Clear the farm to get the soil ready. Make ridges/beds for the sowing (you can get labourers to do it). When putting the seeds into the soil, stick the pointed edge of the seed into the soil and make sure the seed is well buried in the ridge. Ensure spacing to help the growth and to avoid entangling with others. Seed should be planted one foot apart. It takes about ten days to germinate.

Harvesting

One month after planting, create stakes to guide the growing leave and prevent them from tangling. This will also make them grow better as well as growing with ease. To enable continuous growth of the vegetable, count about fifteen leaves from the root before cutting the stem each time you harvest.

Marketing

If you are planting for commercial purposes, you will need to make contacts and build a relationship with restaurants so that you can deliver fresh vegetables to them.

Land

The land has to be fertile with just enough sunlight. Make sure your farm is near the market so that the vegetables will still be fresh when you get to the market. Pesticides should be properly applied to avoid insects infesting the crop and also to avoid health risks to consumers.
